School history of Jinling Women's University of Arts and Sciences

Jinling Women's College of Arts and Sciences is a famous women's missionary university in modern China, which started in Nanjing in 1915.

From the winter of p>1911 to the beginning of 1912, eight American missionary societies gathered in Shanghai to make a plan to open a women's university in the Yangtze River valley, and issued an initiative to missionaries working in this area. In the summer of 1913, the school board was composed of three members from the North Presbyterian Church, the North Baptist Church, the South and North Methodist Church, and the Christian Church. On November 13, that year, the school board elected Mrs. Debenham, the representative of the North Presbyterian Church, as the president of the Women's Union University in the Yangtze River Basin. In November 1914, the management board of the church officially passed the name of Jinling Women's University to replace the name of the Women's Union University in the Yangtze River Valley.

In September, 1915, Golden Girl University rented the Lee House in Nanjing Embroidery Lane as a temporary school site to enroll students. Create a junior school with two subjects: literature and science. In June 1919, Golden Girl University had its school emblem, school song, school color (purple) and motto (good health). In the summer of the same year, Mrs. Debenham went to the United States to raise funds for the establishment of the school. In 1921, she bought land in Taogu (west of the southern end of Ninghai Road) to establish the school (now Suiyuan Campus of Nanjing Normal University). In July 1923, the school moved to a new site. In the autumn of 1924, there were nine departments in the school, including English, history, sociology, mathematics, chemistry, biology, physical education and pre-medicine. At the same time, an attached experimental middle school is set up as a teaching place for graduates. In 1927, the Chinese Language Department was added. In 1928, Mrs. Debenham resigned as the principal, and the school board elected Wu Yifang, the first graduate of Golden Girl University and a doctor in the United States, as the principal.

In December, 193, Golden Women's University was renamed Jinling Women's College of Arts and Sciences. After the outbreak of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, schools were scattered in Shanghai, Wuhan and Chengdu. In January 1938, he moved to Huaxi Dam in Chengdu, Sichuan. In 1939, the Department of Home Economics was added. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, he enrolled students in the original site of Nanjing in September 1946. By 195, the whole school had set up departments: Chinese Department, Foreign Languages Department, Sociology and Social Work Department, History Department, Music Department, Physical Education Department (specialized in physical education), Biology Department, Chemistry Department, Home Economics Department (changed to Child Welfare Department in early 1951), Geography Department, specialized in child care, pre-medical course and pre-nursing course. There are 223 students in school. There are 994 graduates from Golden Women's College.

In p>1951, private Jinling Women's College of Arts and Sciences and private Jinling University merged into public Jinling University. In 1952, the departments of national colleges and universities were adjusted, and the main body of Jinling University merged with Nanjing University.
